Art and Craft Workshops Show Lively and Colourful Spirit of the Český Krumlov Monasteries

Český Krumlov monasteries are home to several art and craft workshops. Come with your children in any weather, the monasteries‘  walls are warm and welcoming when it is cold and gloomy outside. Take a peek at the hands of skilled craftsmen – a glassmaker, dyer, saddler, bag and shoe maker, or a blacksmith and join in their workshops.

At the Pimpinella Glass Studio, Lucie Lukášková works with fire with temperatures of up to 1500°C. If you are not afraid, you can come and test your own skill in making glass beads from special lightweight glass.

The workshop is open from Friday to Monday, and also during autumn and winter months. In the summer, don't miss the so-called Symposium of Coiled Pearls - a meeting and show of professional and amateur glassmakers, creative workshops and a fashion show of glass jewellery and clothing by Český Krumlov designers.

"I've been painting silk since I was 15 years old. At first I was creating just silk paintings, later becoming sad I couldn’t wear them. So I started making dresses," says Kristýna Blažková, who also makes merino wool hats or decorative mandalas in her dyeing workshop.

"Colours are the key to the subconscious, and women in my dresses often blossom. I always say I don't sell clothes, but the feeling a woman gets dressed into."

The workshop in the monastery courtyard is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

In the saddler, bag and shoe maker workshop on the corner of Latrán and Řemeslná Street, you can meet Eduard Hubata, Tereza Dominová or Václav Franče, who will introduce you to and show you various leather accessories and author's work. At the same time, they also cooperate with other "monastic" craftsmen, with a blacksmith, for example, in the production of belt buckles and with a glassmaker in the production of designer jewellery.

"All of us craftsmen here in the monasteries have become so intertwined, that we often think of each other’s creations in advance and are able and happy to incorporate the crafts of all of us into one complete product of beauty."

Open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The local Héfaistos smithery workshop has been run by Pavel Tröster and Tomáš Krejča for four years now. The ringing sound invites inquisitive visitors, who watch with their own eyes how metal objects of all kinds are formed from hot iron.

"We are enthusiasts who love the Middle Ages and fantasy, weapons and armour. You can try forging something in our smithy yourself, or just come and see how we pound the metal," the blacksmiths invite you to visit the workshop.

You can reach them from Tuesday to Saturday between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
